What is Methodology? The Value of Tailoring Your Projects to Your Management Methodology

The concept of methodology refers to the standardized and repeatable collection of standards, techniques, tools, and templates that are meant to accomplish a goal in a professional manner. With most projects, there is an agreed upon method for reaching certain outcomes. For example, the project management team has a set of steps that must be followed during each phase of the project. There may be a variety of methods available or used by different companies, but these are generally based on established best practices
A methodology can also be said to represent the process by which you plan, execute, monitor, control, and close out your projects. This means that it is not limited only to the planning portion of the project. It also includes how you manage resources, schedule tasks, delegate work, keep track of deliverables, and report progress back to stakeholders. In short, this is all about executing the project as planned.
However, not all methodologies are created equal. It can be very tempting to simply use a methodology already developed or, “off the shelf”, for the sake of ease of accessibility and deployment. This often goes poorly for one simple reason. Methodologies are not one size fits all approaches to project management.
What an “off the shelf” methodology fails to consider is the factors unique to your particular project and organization. However, when a talented project manager chooses to customize their methodology, they can then leverage existing intellectual properties, organizational culture, and can better get the entire team behind the project on board.
There are many benefits to using a customized approach to managing your projects. When you begin with a tailored methodology, you can get buy-in from key stakeholders. A custom methodology is built around your company's needs. Because it is a product of your team, your employees will feel more invested in its success. They are more likely to cooperate and fully participate because they are much more familiar with the approach and why it was chosen. Additionally, this process can also allow you to re-evaluate and perhaps change existing organizational structures that may be hindering the successes of your projects. Tailored methodologies are by their very nature adaptable to the situation.
