What makes an effective corporate vision?

Corporate vision drives innovation, even if it has become something of a buzz word. The desire to not invoke the cynicism so often associated with terms such as this may lead an organization to calling it something else, but the basic premise remains the same. Yet, most employees cannot even recall their organization’s mission statement, let alone apply it effectively to their day-to-day work. Most corporate mission statements are ineffective, but those that are effective have a few key traits in common.

Inspiring

A corporate vision needs to inspire everyone involved to strive forward towards a higher ideal. It should not be bland or generic. A bland corporate vision is one that is easily forgotten by the very teams tasked with carrying it out. An inspiring vision is memorable and helps drive individual and team performance. It can also help guide people through tough decisions during challenging times.

Future-Focused

A corporate vision must always be future focused. A company without a vision for the future is doomed to fail. Every employee should know what they need to do today, tomorrow, and next week, but they should also understand how their efforts will impact the organization in years to come.

Motivating

An effective corporate vision is one that motivates the people involved in the organization to carry it out. It inspires them to move beyond their normal limits and to perform at higher levels. It does not have to include lofty goals, but it should be one that can be seen as achievable by the members of the organization over time. Pie in the sky dreams will be readily seen as such.

Memorable

The most effective corporate visions are those that are easily memorable. Your team should not have to consult a collection of documents in order to ascertain what your vision is – it should be worded in a simple, direct, and easily memorable way. At no time should the members of the organization be unclear about what their mission and prime directive is.

Driven by purpose and values

Finally, the most effective corporate visions are driven by purpose and the company’s values. The best missions contain a hint of purpose, and the best corporate visions embody the fundamental principles of the company. They should never be confused with simply being words on paper. They should serve as a rallying cry that leads people to get up in the morning and work hard every single day. Corporate vision is more than just a list of lofty goals and ideals. It is a tool that can be used to motivate, inspire, and even transform a company into something better. When properly constructed and implemented, it can have a massive impact on both individual and organizational performance.
