Professional Success with Goal Setting

As with any endeavor, success is measured through achievement. In the professional setting, achievements are easily noted and can be a powerful motivator for a team to strive forward and attempt to excel. A successful and ambitious individual is never satisfied with things as they are – they are always striving to improve and push the envelope. They take responsibility for their actions and are constantly setting new goals.
In the end, setting a goal in and of itself signifies that a professional wishes to change something about the way they currently operate. A well written goal provides not only the motivation to make that change, but a clear focus of attention and baseline for measuring the changes the professional wishes to enact.
Setting an actionable goal begins with a process of self-reflection. Through recognition of the existence of a problem, professionals can begin to brainstorm potential solutions to the same. This should only be a recognition of the current approach or situation as it is, without any sort of value judgment. Next, they should envision what they would like to see in their working environment or personal behavior instead. The gap between these two situations should be assessed critically – why is it as large as it is, and what needs to be done to bridge it? After identifying the motivations behind the change and making a commitment, a professional should then focus on making those goals specific, measurable, realistic, and time phased.
The biggest component of making behaviorally specific changes in the professional environment is the mental prep work that goes into identifying the problem and the specific steps one would need to take in order to rectify it moving forward. Once the specific goal has been set, only then can an action plan be developed and implemented. All of this must be done while also keeping in mind the fact that the goal may not be fully realized at first and will likely require many iterations and improvements before being completed to satisfaction.
Regarding measurement, it is important to note that there is no single definitive metric for evaluating whether a professional's goal was met. There are simply too many variables involved. Instead, the measure of success is often determined by how well the goal was achieved relative to the original specifications. It is okay to adjust and re-evaluate a goal or the action plan related to it if things aren’t working for the individual, or for individual stakeholders in a project. The progress towards a goal should always be regarded critically so as not to commit to approaches that aren’t panning out. Reaching professional goals should always be a process of iteration and improvement in and of itself.
