The Importance of Goals and Creating a Vision

Organizations won’t last very long without a long-term vision – a positive image for what the future will bring. The vision of a leader can serve to inspire the people under them to strive towards a goal. However, a shared vision between leadership and their team can be a powerful force for pushing an organization forward towards new horizons.
Shared goals can inspire a team to reach further than they ever thought possible. So, how do you create such a vision? How does one begin laying out their plans? A good place to start is by asking yourself some questions: What are those goals? Those goals can be identified through discussion and communication with the team. Taking just a few moments out of every meeting to communicate with the team and identify their issues, aspirations, and conflicts surrounding the project can dramatically help to place management and the team on the same page when it comes to the development of shared solutions and vision.
Setting shared goals is important to project success because it helps to build camaraderie and reduce project management friction. When the project team views management as fundamentally “on their side” and aligned with their needs, it becomes all that much easier for them to align themselves to the shared vision of the project which in turn produces a higher level of satisfaction.
Shared goals can turn into shared vision through simple team building exercises that project managers may already have at their disposal. Encouraging the team to think broadly about the project, rather than simply within what may be a narrowly defined scope, can help them to be not only critical in their thought processes, but also innovative with their ideas and potential solutions. A project manager should expect some cynicism at first in this process, until they have demonstrated their desire to work collaboratively with the team to develop a vision that is not only aligned with what leadership and the client require of them, but with what they need as a team to operate at their maximum efficiency. Explaining this to the team can be done through a series of positive statements that encourage them to think broadly, such as “wouldn’t it be great if we could...” or “what do you need in order to do…?”
