What is Organizational Strategy? Why You Need an Organizational Strategy for Your Business

What is an organizational strategy? A strategy is a plan that defines both an organization’s “long-term vision” and how the organization will get to that vision.

For instance, if you were a skincare company, your strategy might be “Serving as the leading dealer of XYZ product.” Once you have a strategy in place, you will then define the path you plan to take to reach that goal. This might look like: “Serving as the leading dealer of XYZ product by boosting social media advertising efforts.” Setting both a goal and a path to get to that goal is critical for successful implementation of an organizational strategy.

You absolutely need an organizational strategy for your business.

1. Projects won’t serve a purpose without one: Without an overall strategy, what are your projects accomplishing? You will be wasting valuable resources on projects that do not align with an overall vision and strategy.
2. A set vision guides projects within the organization: Having an organizational strategy means having a vision for your business. Knowing where you want your business to ultimately end up can help you better guide your projects to achieve this vision.
3. An organizational strategy can help save precious resources: By having a strategy, you have a better understanding of what you need to do (in terms of projects) to accomplish that strategy. When you have this understanding, you will be able to allocate the proper resources to projects that will serve your strategy. Save time, money, and other valuable resources by having an organizational strategy in place.
4. A strategy can help you set benchmarks and short-term goals: Having an organizational strategy means you can set benchmarks and short-term goals to determine if you are achieving the strategy. This helps guide your organization’s overall efforts and projects.

Organizational strategy is crucial to your business’ overall success. Without one, you will be lost at sea, unsure of what projects you need to implement and how to implement them. Think of a strategy as a map, leading you where you need to go. Without a map, how will you know your destination?
