Enabling Organizational Change Management Using Agile Project Management
It can be a challenge to enact organizational change management. Today, we highlight a few key tips on integrating this process into your business by means of agile project management.
Organizational change management is when a business rearranges a main component such as policy, culture, technologies, or processes. Project managers play a role in helping that change become integrated throughout the organization. Organizational change management can help minimize risk, increase company skills, and overall development. Change management is all about developing a culture that embraces change. Developing this new culture can be a big task, but one way to successfully implement organizational change management is through agile project management.
Agile project management is an iterative process, which means that the processes for planning are broken down into smaller, more manageable pieces. The smaller, broken-down pieces are called sprints and they typically last a few days or up to a few weeks. Instead of running testing cycles through development, agile project management continually adapts as the project continues. This concept began in 2001 with the Agile Manifesto. Read more about it here.
So, how can agile project management help enable organizational change management?
Improved Communication and Responsiveness
Change management requires communication to be clear, early, and often. Agile project management can increase healthy communication and responsiveness as tasks are smaller and more detailed. It is important to prepare the organization for change both practically and culturally. Improved communication can help managers become more responsive to a developing issue and provides thorough control of projects. The ability to swiftly correct mistakes and redirect focus can help the organization to remain on budget and save time. Unexpected changes can throw organizations off kilter, but agile project management can help break down overwhelming changes into more reasonable steps.
Increased Quality Control
If an organization’s team can adapt to changes while still providing quality goods and services, then they are on their way to successfully implementing change management. If the internal organization is not ready to embrace change, then that attitude will be reflected in the output. Agile project management can prevent change management from disrupting quality control. Employee teams need to be flexible, intuitive, and adaptable to circumstances to keep producing quality work. Agile is all about continual improvement, which can prove to be a helpful ally when working to make changes in an organization. By encouraging initiative, independence, and improvement, agile project management generates high quality teams that produce high quality results.
Fantastic Flexibility
One of the main goals of change management is to build a culture where employees are flexible to changes in the workplace. Luckily, agile project management is all about flexibility, allowing teams to operate in shorter time frames while receiving helpful feedback. The dynamic nature of agile project management provides room for adjustments, critiques, and tweaks to develop a team of innovative, flexible employees.
