Using Project Management To Enable Change Management

Posted by [email protected] on Feb. 25, 2022  /  Announcement  /   0

Projects and programs by their very nature create change. To successfully implement organizational strategy, companies need project and program managers with the skills to drive and navigate change. Being receptive and adaptable to said changes is an important tenet of organizational growth, and change management is an incredibly necessary byproduct and benefit of your project management efforts.

What Is Change Management?

“Change management is defined as the methods and manners in which a company describes and implements change within both its internal and external processes. This includes preparing and supporting employees, establishing the necessary steps for change, and monitoring pre- and post-change activities to ensure successful implementation.” - ASQ

Recognizing the importance of prioritizing change management is clear. Nothing prospers from standing stagnant, and a business needs to consistently self-assess what can be made better in order to thrive and adapt over the lifespan.

Successful change management is not the norm in organizations today, in fact, studies show that only 18 percent of companies are effective change enablers. It can be a challenge for companies and leaders to let go of old processes and the comfort that comes with them, but the most successful organizations will change effectively, and with that, they'll stay in front of the competition.

So what can you do to practice enabling change in your project management?

These quick tips are a great starting point:

  • Having well-defined milestones and metrics
  • Having senior management committed to change
  • Establishing and communicating concrete ownership and accountability
  • Using standardized project management practices
  • Having engaged executive sponsors

The other factor in play when it comes to change management is sustaining the changes put in place. It's easy to implement something for a spell, but to stick with a change, put your full weight behind it, and see it through to success is a real challenge. There is a myriad of techniques and strategies to best accomplish these, and our February focus is on promoting great change management.
